3 Things I've Learned About Ministry

The term ministry is understood and interpreted differently by many people in the kingdom. So don’t go into ministry to be personally famous or because you are ambitious. Go into ministry because you know God has called you.

As I write my thesis and near its completion, I wanted to share my thoughts so far on my journey. It’s been delightful to be a part of a wonderful church and to walk through the process of becoming who God is calling me to be.

The call to ministry is a call to equip and empower the people of God for a unique purpose, and expansion of the kingdom.

Here are three ideas I have learnt so far in the last couple of months

           Embrace Process

In a generation of instant gratification, ‘process’ is a word that is completely overlooked and undermined.

God has clearly been showing me the power of process and how significant it is to the development of a man or woman of God.

I would encourage every young person not to rush the process but to work on the character.

Running away from process delays your appointed time.

Don’t focus on being a big minister, focus on being an effective minister.

Prophetic words are an indication of where God may want to take you, but ask God to show you his process and a path.

The ‘process’ is a season to develop intimacy and become conversational with God, learning his ways.

The process develops your dependency on the Holy Spirit.

          The process eliminates junk

           Eliminate Pride

If you go into ministry desiring a platform to preach you might not last because the foundation is weak.

Pride is a subtle tactic of the enemy.

          Offence deals with pride

Offence tests the condition of your heart

Offences will affect your intimacy with God

Preachers, teachers, elders, leaders, whoever you are: God tests your heart through the offence! And if you’ve been in church long enough you’ll know that one of the major reasons for people leaving the church is an undealt offence.

I think if you’re going to eliminate pride, you need to be processing every offence out of your life or else it becomes a future trap for the enemy to use against you. I love Jesus, He had such a big heart that offence had no room.

           Extreme Passion

If you are in ministry, in order to last you need to have a passion for people.

God’s heart is for his children and if there is no passion to see people succeed and to see them fulfilling their purpose then you might just have a career and not a calling.

I know today that there are many in ministry that are not serving for people but for a paycheck.

One of the things I have reminded myself constantly is that God’s work really matters and that I have ability to influence whether people will be with God or away from God, for eternity.

This article is written for the purpose of helping young people thinking to join the ministry or already in ministry so that they keep the focus on Jesus.

Look After Your Soul

Every human being is a spirit man that has a soul that lives in a body. God uses all three parts to build his kingdom. When you’re saved your spirit man is justified before God. In other words, God sees you through the eyes of Jesus as you stand in his righteousness. However, as you come into the kingdom, one intention of the Holy Spirit is to regenerate your SOUL and take you in the journey of sanctification. Sanctification is the process of being purified and processed so that you can produce more fruit for God.

My article is not so much about the spirit man, it’s about your soul.

I truly believe in the power of the soul and it’s impact on a persons life when it is healthy. The soul is made up of mind, will and emotions.

Sanctification is a LIFE LONG PROCESS….

Please never think that when you are saved you will never have pride

Or that you will never be offended or hurt, or attacked….

          No.

I believe many reading this may have been hurt in the past through unmet expectations, broken relationships, a divorce, an undealt offence, or have buried it rather than dealt with it.

I want to highlight how offence continues to work in the soul if it not processed.

Person A says something to Person B that hurts the heart.

Person B can do three things

1 – Go into isolation, bury the issue, never talk openly to a wise person

2 – Go to the Pastor or leader to complain

3 – Go to Person A and restore, reconcile the relationship and move on

Most people do 1 and 2 but do not openly go to the person who has hurt them and talk about what the issue is.

If you do not deal with the root of offence you live a very unfulfilled life and your perception of people may alter over time. I know some great people with potential that have snuffed out God’s dreams for their life simply because they hold onto things of the past.

Do you realise that if Person B is holding grudges and refuses to let go of past wrongs; this type of emotional wound is yoked to a spirit of bitterness and infirmity that can manifest in various crippling illnesses?

Do you realise that God is calling you to live in freedom?

Friend, my encouragement to you is simple. Dealing with your offended spirit requires you to go and make peace with the person and admit that you’re hurt and reconcile as soon as you can.

Pursue peace with all men, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord, watching diligently so that no one falls short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness spring up to cause trouble, and many become defiled by it. — Hebrews 12:14 – 15

P.S Don’t post your hurts on Facebook.

          Prayer for Offense

Thank You, Lord, that I walk in love. You said in 1 Corinthians 13 that love is patient and kind. I confess that I am patient with others and I am kind. I do not keep track of wrongs. I do not hold grudges. I am free from offense. I break the power of offense off my life in the name of Jesus. I choose to walk in forgiveness toward others. I choose to release all pain and wounds. Father, I thank You for Your nature, Your love, and Your mercy operating in me toward others. I release all hurts, and I declare Your love is washing over me now in Jesus’s name.

Enough is Enough

Many have asked for my recent Sunday night talk where I talk about knowing your identity, assignment and victory in Jesus. What you must realise is who you really are in Jesus! Enough is enough, the enemy has no right to touch what belongs to ours, we must take hold of every promise in Christ. In this conversation, I speak from 1 Peter 5:8 “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour”

How to Kill Comparison

Kill comparison before it kills you.

Today people are weighed down by looking at what others have and are…

Do you realise when you watch others and compare your life to them you are being psychologically and subconsciously effected?

Social comparison theory states that we determine our own social and personal worth based on how we stack up against others. We sometimes compare ourselves to others as a way of fostering self-improvement, self-motivation, and a positive self-image. As a result, we are constantly evaluating ourselves and others across a variety of domains, such as attractiveness, wealth, intelligence, and success.

          How Do You Stop Comparing?

            Stop

You need to completely stop, a drastic change will produce drastic results. I can guarantee that as soon as you stop comparing yourself there will be a noticeable difference in the quality of life. You will start to experience true joy.

“So stop being critical and condemning of other believers, but instead determine to never deliberately cause a brother or sister to stumble and fall because of your actions.” – Romans 14:13 TPT

Who do you need to stop watching?

            Look

Look around to everything you can be thankful for. Count your blessings.

Being consistently grateful is a rare attitude to find in a person. Being grateful for little things, big things, good things, even bad things that may have happened is crucial!! As a child of God remember that all things work out for your good according to his purpose.

“So we are convinced that every detail of our lives is continually woven together to fit into God’s perfect plan of bringing good into our lives, for we are his lovers who have been called to fulfill his designed purpose.” – Romans 8:28 – TPT

            Listen

Usually when I am wanting to zone out I put on my AirPods, I completely zone out the people talking in my environment and I’m focused on hearing what is been said through my ears.

           Who do listen to most?

Your life is significantly impacted by the voice you listen to. There’s power in proximity.

I’ve learnt one thing that I can’t help you change your life till I change the voice you trust

“For those who listen with open hearts will receive more revelation. But those who don’t listen with open hearts will lose what little they think they have!” Mark 4:25 TPT

Finally, in a world where success is measured against how well you may be doing compared to someone else, I want to end by saying that comparison will truly kill you.

In the past season of my life I have truly enjoyed my life, I’ve been deeply satisfied because I am no longer affected by the position, success, greatness and activity of others. Focusing on my own race and in what God has called me to do brings true fulfilment.

What good will it do when I fix my eyes on the world when Jesus has designed his children to live life fixed on him.

“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.” – Hebrews 12:2 NLT

How to Develop A Sensitive Spirit

Today, I want to share a few thoughts on how you can develop a sensitive spirit. This article is not for everyone but if you’re truly focused on developing your spirit man this article is for you.

Firstly, you need to understand the importance of actively involving the Holy Spirit in your life. One of the ways you do this is by asking Him to fill you. This is evident through speaking in a heavenly language which is for personal edification.

“But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]. For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes the sinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do.”

          ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:16-17‬ ‭AMP

           Learn to Walk

If you’re going to be sensitive you have to understand the importance of patience and knowing that it’s a journey. God desires to speak to each one of us, but developing that habit of walking in intimacy is a key. Notice, that when you walk, each step is consistent with each other. You grow by consistency and by daily decisions. When we make the decision to walk with God, it pleases him and His work of changing our being into the image of his son begins. Don’t set your expectations on becoming an overnight success in hearing God, because in a generation of noise the closer you be with him the clear he will sound to you.

            Learn to Decide

You have the potential to hear God and this desire and longing to hear him does something in your spirit. Are you really wanting to hear the voice of God? As you renew your mind daily you the voice of God becomes very natural to you, but it’s a process. Look at the passage above it writes “seek him and be responsive to his guidance”. I want to highlight “responsiveness to his guidance” Have you been in a situation where you know what you should do but you don’t do it? That’s a clear example of not being responsive. This is my practical advice to you. Next time you hear the voice of guidance, listen to it IMMEDIATELY. The longer it takes you to respond the quieter the voice gets and the weaker your ability to respond to that voice becomes.

           Practical tip:

You have less than 1 second to decide whether you’ll respond to that voice in your head or not.

It’s easy to be fake and superficial in the world of social media and today so many people are looking for a platform but don’t want to be processed. In this message, Christine dives down into the process of being crushed so that the anointing is developed. She talks about the difference of being anointed and appointed

Your Struggle Has Meaning

I want you to know, dear ones, what has happened to me has not hindered, but helped my ministry of preaching the gospel, causing it to expand and spread to many people – Phil 1:12 (TPT)

Paul is writing this from a prison cell, when all hell is breaking loose around him.

Paul is a man of experience in 2 Cor 11:23 you find the account of the struggles….

          I have worked harder,

been put in prison more often

          been whipped times without number

          faced death again and again.

Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes.

Three times I was beaten with rods.

          Once I was stoned.

          Three times I was shipwrecked.

Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.

I have traveled on many long journeys.

I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers.

I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles.

I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas.

And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not.

I have worked hard and long enduring many sleepless nights.

I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone without food.

I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.

Then, besides all this, I have the daily burden of my concern for all the churches.

I wonder why Paul gets to write half of the New Testament…This man was truly unstoppable. Even now, through his words he is impacting, influencing, imparting and transforming lives for Jesus. Do you realise, we get to be and do this too? God is calling you to walk in a greater depth of sacrifice and action. Paul wasn’t a man of just word, He was a man of action. He wanted to know Christ and be like Christ.

Philippians 1:6 (TPT) I pray with great faith for you, because I’m fully convinced that the One who began this glorious work[a] in you will faithfully continue the process of maturing you and will put his finishing touches to it until the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Through all that happens in your life, I want you to know that God is maturing you. He’s finishing you to make you look like Christ. It is crazy to see how many people believe in grace but never have seen the grace of God operate in their life. Grace is more than a disposition, it’s a flow, a catalyst, it’s out of grace that we serve God. Grace allows us to function in our true calling, grace empowers us to live above our struggles and suffering.

Don’t underestimate the power of your struggle. It has meaning!

Prayer Point (Pray this out loud)

Father I thank you that you’ve called me to succeed and flourish in every area of life. God I thank you that your grace is sufficient for me. You never give up on finishing what you have started in me. God I pray that I will be faithful to you everyday and that I will steward your grace to glorify your name. Have your way in me. In Jesus name, Amen

Action Point: Now, take a moment and ask God to show you areas you are reluctant in to let God have his way in you

Let me know how this post has blessed you

Why Submission is Necessary

I recently received a question, “Josh, what’s the real benefit to submitting to my leaders, I don’t see a point and I really don’t like it” Here’s my answer:

Most people don’t like the word submit, or the statement: Submit to your leaders. There will always be a point in our lives where we find ourselves under the authority and leadership of another person. During these points of our lives, perspective is everything.

This opportunity to be led by someone can either grow us, or be completely wasted. We choose. As it is said in Romans 13:11- Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.

Friends, there is a reason why they are placed in that position. We must grab hold of the opportunity to be led by someone as this will sharpen us.

As Proverbs 27:17 says, As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Allow yourself to be sharpened. Yes, the process of being sharpened and moulded is not easy. It is painful as old habits flake off, and the process of refinement takes place. However, if we allow ourselves to change our perspective and learn to submit, we can squeeze out every drop of benefit from this opportunity.

We must understand that growth is a process and not a destination. The leaders assigned to us can only assist us through this process of refinement, if we learn to submit to them. As one team, we all have our own strengths which are equally as important in contributing towards the shared goal. Each member plays a crucial role regardless of how small, or big the task you have been given is.

Lets change our perspective and stretch ourselves. Lets joyfully go through the fire knowing, that we will come out as gold. Lets submit to the authorities we are under, and allow ourselves to be refined and sharpened. Most importantly, lets never forget “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. – Luke 16:10

          SEVEN KEY THOUGHTS

Authority has been assigned by God and there is a reason why they are our leaders

          One friend sharpens another

Opportunity to be sharpened – carry the responsibilities

Perspective – Go through the fire and come out as GOLD

Faithful in the little means you’ll be given more

Growth is a process, not a destination

Team = family = different ways/strengths to reach one goal

Three Questions Before You Change

We all have intentions of wanting to see change in one area of our lives or more. This enthusiasm and drive may last one month, or two. Here is my tested perspective on how to see change in your life.

There are three types of people in this world

          Those who make things happen,

          Those who watch things happen,

Those who wonder what just happened.

Before seeing any change in your life, you need to ask yourself questions and honestly answer them. If you’re not going to be honest with yourself, I suggest not attempting this process. (Note that I have tried this method and am therefore, speaking with personal experience)

Ask yourself these questions before identifying an area that you need to change in:

            1. Why should I change?

Until you are convinced that you need to change a certain area of your life, the effort you put into pursuing the changes will be purposeless. The why factor is the purpose statement of why you want to make this change in your life

            2. What do I want to change about me?

This could be in the area of character or attitude or development of a particular skill

            3. How committed will I be to changing?

Writing a list how this change would affect will become your motivation. (For example, If I lose 5kgs I’m going to be more alert and active in my mental and physical stamina which will allow me to focus on my family)

I’d love to receive a reply from you and work with you through this process of change

3 Ways How to Reduce Stress at University

I’ve completed my Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Auckland and often times first year university students get overwhelmed with the assignments, exams, fast paced environment and a lack of support. What you put in at uni is what you’re going to get out. If you invest time in relationships and your network you’ll get out of it potential job offers and long-term friendships, if you invest your time to just study you may get high grades but not grow in your interpersonal skills, so balance is the key.

I know people who have just studied, never met new people, never really took hold of opportunities and today have a limited network and a crap job. Anyways, back to stress. Students get stressed because they let university get to their heads because they have no capacity to handle pressure. I recommend you to embrace hardship and let it become your new normal and as a result your capacity will increase and growth takes place

             Set your mind

An average student will endure 3-4 years of lectures. I think we get too caught up with the pressure of attending that we quickly forget the reasons why we’re there. Are you studying for the sake of it or are you actually wanting to study because you want knowledge? I know MBA students who work at petrol stations and they are not satisfied, because they did it for the wrong reasons. Why are you studying what you’re studying? Are you passionate about it? Are you going to stick to your degree rather than changing every 6 months and increasing your debt? Book knowledge is good but life knowledge is crucial and to a certain extent university gives you wider perspective of people and different experiences. Set your mind to have a purpose.

             Expand your network

Meet people. Develop professional connections and get on LinkedIn. Who you hang around with at uni matters, I’m glad I always studied with people who were smarter than me and helped me along the way. I stress this because your friends have differing perspectives on study material and collaborating your notes and ideas create a room for growth. The average student pays about $18-20k over a couple of years educating themselves, that price includes access to lecturers, tutors and unfortunately most students I know haven’t even bothered to get access to this kinda stuff. There's no reason to shy away from tutors and lecturers that you pay for - they get a very good salary, use these resources to its full capacity.

             Learn your learning style

Don’t study anything unless it excites you. What do you want to do with your time at University? Are you enjoying what you’re studying? Or is it just pure stress and unnecessary pressure? There’s no right way to study. You have to find your rhythm quickly, if it’s visual, use visual aids, If it’s listening to someone teach, maybe listen to a recorded lecture and record yourself saying out the material, whatever way you learn, dominate it and become a master of your technique. Even before going to university you should really consider and check the way you learn best. I know of engineering students who never went to lectures, but still passed with flying colours.

University is not life. The best way to succeed at university is to ask questions, organise yourself, make a plan what you want to do, take breaks, sleep and don't put off assignments. Keep on top of things so you don’t have to deal with the pressure. Think of university as just a season of your educational life. Never stop educating yourself as knowledge is power.

If you don’t like what you’re doing, do something about it!

            Let me know

Why You Should Leave Your Job

I recently left my well-paying job to attend to my business and church full-time. I contemplated and tried to stall this process but sooner or later I had to do it. The corporate knowledge I've gathered in the last couple years of work has definitely shaped me positively and I'd like to thank everybody who's played their part. In this post I want to point out two reasons why I left and my outlook on life which I hope inspires you. (By the way this post isn't to tell you to leave your current job, but to think about where you're at in life.)

           I won't get back today

Let's say an average human life is 80 years, if you're over 20, unfortunately there are 21,900 days left. I'm only 24 once and everyday counts for me. I won't get to relive today and being assertive about where I'm going is absolutely crucial. Every minute is important to me and I'd like to encourage everyone to think like this because time is not on your side. If you want to do something in life, set out a plan of steps you need to take and don't get distracted. Some folk are not happy with where they're at with life, job or relationship... and it's purely because they decide to sit and expect things to change for them. If you don’t like where you are at, CHANGE. If you're around the age of 15-24, explore, explore and explore as sitting on social media scrolling your news feed will not create the life you dream about.

Living Risky is Better Than Living Safe

I know people who have worked a 9-5 job at the same company for 45 years, I truly appreciate their dedication to their work place, (side note: For those of you in this place in your life, you're already happy with where you are, fulfilling your potential and not requiring change - that's OK! This post is written to challenge those who are not satisfied and know deep down there are better options) but being in one place will only take you so far...and yes experience matters but it isn't everything. When you're challenged, put on the spot and on the verge to taking that leap of faith you'll quickly discover what was always inside you. If you decide to live a safe life that's ok and don't want to take big risks decide to take small risks and see how far you can go.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did." - Mark Twain

Many live in the safe zone, in comfort, in complacency, talking themselves out of potential possibilities. But if you're going to sit back and watch your life pass by, you will not discover who you can become and the impact you can make in your world.

The 4 Stages to Stress

In this video I quickly share 4 stages to stress. From my experience, it all starts when you start to overthink about things out of your control. You can’t add another minute to your life by stressing or worrying, so don’t. Although you can’t control your circumstance, you can always control your reaction towards a circumstance

10 Questions You Must Ask Yourself Before You Die

Sooner or later we come to realise that we’re getting older, time is running out and life will soon come to an end. The question I challenge myself with is: Have I achieved my purpose?

Did I really fully live or did I just exist? I have people come to me and ask me, “Josh, I don’t know what I’m doing in life? I don’t know what I should focus on…”

I’ve learnt over time these questions below lead me to discover what path I should pursue.

What is my deepest desire? Beyond the emotions, feelings, ups and downs, what is the one wish that you long for?

What is my passion? You have many passions, select one, don’t just feel your passion (feelings don’t last) pursue your passion

What makes me angry? See your frustration as a motivation to move to the next level. Sometimes frustration is a sign that something needs shifted in your life

What ideas are persistent? Regardless of a changing environment what ideas, thoughts, visions stick by

What do I constantly imagine? Think about what you’re thinking about; track your thought patterns.

What do I want to do for humanity? Ronald Reagan once said “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone” May I suggest, rather than envisioning to change the world, think about what you can do for at least one person and teach that person to do the same.

What are my recurring dreams? Take a note of the dream that keeps recurring. Dreams that you can vividly remember hold to has deeper significance

What brings me the greatest fulfilment? This question goes beyond just a sense of happiness and joy, what truly gives you that sense of satisfaction?

What could I do forever even if there was no monetary compensation? I believe this question is difficult to grasp because we’re wired to expect money when we work.

What would I rather be doing? If I could stop you now regardless of whatever you are doing, would you choose to do something other than what you’re doing now?

Choose to live life wisely by questioning where you are going in life.

Trust me, people who can’t be true to themselves don’t even scratch the surface of their potential and purpose.

I believe that it is important to be careful if you are new to a relationship, as the initial stages of any type of relationship can be risky. I have seen many hurt due to a lack of understanding of what to bring in a relationship. When I speak in this video below, I’m communicating particularly about the first stages of entering a relationship towards marriage. You may not agree with my opinions however, I am always open to suggestions and opinions.
